Even though there are several popular brands that provide bass-boosted options in the affordable and mid-range headphones, none have gone beyond Skullcandy so far. The latest Skullcandy Crusher VO promises the adjustable ‘sensory' bass, but is it the best pair of wireless headphones for bass enthusiasts? Let’s find out in this detailed review.
During the last few years, Skullcandy has remained true to its design style, and the latest Crusher Evo follows the same concept. Even though almost entirely plastic, the Skullcandy Crusher Evo Wireless headphone looks stunning and has unique elements and materials in use, like the velvet-like cloth at the top of the headband, the spongy padding under that, and the big round buttons. Moreover, the padding is soft, making the fit comfortable for listening sessions of up to an hour or more.
It’s slightly smaller than older Crusher versions but still has an over-ear headset and can also be folded for easy storage. The big physical buttons on the right side control playback and volume, while the left side has the power button, USB Type-C port for charging, and a 3.5mm socket for wired connectivity.
However, what makes Skullcandy Crusher VO unique is the bass slider. It is basically free sliding vertical control to set the intensity of the ‘sensory’ bass. Apart from this, you can adjust how aggressive and punchy the lows should be without going through equalizer settings or software-based controls.
The wireless headphones are fully powered by 40mm dynamic drivers and come with a frequency response range of 20-20,000Hz. For the connectivity purpose, Skullcandy Crusher Evo Wireless headphone uses Bluetooth 5, with support for the SBC and AAC Bluetooth codecs. In addition, the sales package includes a nylon carry case, a USB charging cable, and a stereo cable for wired connectivity. However, the lack of support for Qualcomm aptX can be disappointing for some as it is present on the Crusher ANC.
Like most Skullcandy headphones and earphones, the Crusher Evo is compatible with the Skullcandy app, available for Android and iOS. Even though the customization options are limited, you can set up a personal sound profile with Audiodo in Skullcandy Crusher VO. Apart from this, you can select between Music, Podcast, and Movie modes for basic audio equalizer tweaking.
When it comes to battery life, the headphone is claimed to be 40 hours, and they do come to that figure in my testing, with varying volume levels and the bass slider set at different points throughout the review period. Although the Skullcandy Crusher Evo Wireless headphone is meant for listening to music, you can certainly use it as a hands-free headset for voice calls, if necessary.
The tight, aggressive bass is undoubtedly enjoyable with Skullcandy Crusher VO as it adds a ‘concert’ like feel to a great extent. The headphones are well and truly all about the bass enthusiasts who get the ability to tweak the bass as per their likings. At considerable levels, the drive in the sound without the bass getting muddy or overpowering is the USP of Crusher VO.
