Design

The device is powered by a quad-core Amlogic processor and has 2GB of RAM plus 8GB of internal storage for apps. The latest MI Box 4K supports streaming at up to 4K resolution, along with high dynamic range support up to the HDR10 format. The Box has its own remote powered by two AAA batteries and it navigates around the interface and open apps. The remote is similar to that of the MI TV range, however, the difference in software is quite visible and the remote has an app drawer button and runs only on Android TV without PatchWall. The quality of the remote is lesser than the ideal one and it also does not have a mute button.

Key Features

The Mi Box 4K provides a huge collection of apps and games for your TV. It comes with a handful of preinstalled apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube. It also has the Google Play Store from where you can install the rest of the apps for your Android TV. The device comes with built-in Google Chromecast functionality similar to the Chromecast Ultra and supports casting at up to 4K resolution. You can either mirror your screen or cast directly from supported apps on compatible devices. You can also plug a USB drive into the MI Box 4K to play local content. However, the box doesn’t have a pre-installed media player app but some popular file manager apps on the Google Play Store for Android TV are capable of playing content in various file formats and resolutions, including HDR content. The Box also supports streaming at up to 4K resolution, with support for HDR up to the HDR10 standard. However, it lacks support for the better Dolby Vision standard which holds back the Mi Box 4K a bit, especially when the market offers some televisions priced under Rs. 30,000 supporting the 12-bit standard.HDR10 is worth the money if your TV supports it. The device also supports Dolby audio and comes in handy when connected to televisions or sound systems that also support the audio format. The Mi Box 4K also features the Google Assistant for which there is a dedicated button and microphone on the remote. You can also link it to other Google Assistant devices for audio instructions. The Mi Box also has a data saver function that reduces bandwidth consumption while streaming.

Working

Just like the Apple TV 4K, the Mi Box 4K is also a self-sufficient device with capabilities and functions. You have to connect the box to your TV using the HDMI cable, and to a power outlet. Once this is done, the Mi Box 4K is ready to power on and set up. The device can be connected to the internet only through Wi-Fi. Bluetooth 4.2 is also supported for pairing the box with audio devices, game controllers, and the included remote. Then, you have to link your Google account to the device and as you do so, the Mi Box 4K takes over as the smart interface and sends the picture and sound signals to your TV. The external speakers can be connected to the device using the Audio Out port on the Mi Box 4K.

Final Opinion

The MI Box 4K offers a full stock experience without any significant omissions or brand-centric overlays as compared to other Android TV-powered streaming devices in India. The hybrid audio out and USB port are worth all the money spent. However, the remote building quality, the inefficiency of HDMI CEC, and the inability to support Dolby’s vision are some cons one must ponder upon before buying the latest MI Box 4K.
